Het Britse Lagerhuis behandelt op 20 februari de petitie die vraagt om de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump niet uit te nodigen voor een staatsbezoek omdat dit koningin Elizabeth in verlegenheid brengt. De petitie had dinsdagavond 1,7 miljoen steunbetuigingen.
Een verzoekschrift dat van regering en parlement precies het tegenovergestelde wenst, heeft inmiddels zo’n 170.000 handtekeningen. Dat betekent dat over deze petitie ook gesproken moet worden en het Lagerhuis heeft dinsdag laten weten dat op dezelfde dag te zullen doen.
De tegenpetitie stelt dat Donald Trump uitgenodigd moet worden als leider van de vrije wereld en omdat het Verenigd Koninkrijk een land is dat het vrije woord ondersteunt. “Mensen die andere gedachten hebben, moeten niet de mond worden gesnoerd”, vinden de opstellers.
Premier Theresa May nodigde Trump vorige week vrijdag namens koningin Elizabeth uit voor een staatsbezoek. Ongebruikelijk snel en Buckingham Palace is door het verzet tegen de komst van Trump in verlegenheid gebracht, aldus commentatoren. May echter vindt dat het bezoek, waarvoor nog geen datum is afgesproken, doorgang moet vinden.
